Autologous Stem Cell Transplant
What is Autologous BMT?
This transplant is used to treat a number of blood cancers such as leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and certain tumors including breast cancer, testicular cancer and osteosarcoma.
How is it performed?
In this method, stem cells are removed from the patient’s body before starting high doses of chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Even though the high dose treatment kills cancer cells, in the process it also ends up getting rid of blood-producing cells. In an autologous transplant, these stem cells are collected from the patient and then stored in a freezer. Later, once the treatment is over, the collected stem cells are put back in the body allowing the bone marrow to make normal blood cells.
